GPT Image 2 vs Nano Banana 2 for Product Shots

jul 21, 2026

Ecommerce teams do not need another vibes debate. They need to know which model keeps the bottle looking like their bottle after three regenerations.

I compared GPT Image 2 and Nano Banana 2 on NanoBananaTool for product work: white-background heroes, bathroom-shelf lifestyle, and label-forward packs. Same references, same prompt skeletons, scored on SKU honesty — not Instagram pretty.

TL;DR verdict

Test setup

For each SKU photo:

  1. White hero prompt (centered, softbox, preserve logo)
  2. Lifestyle shelf prompt (product dominant)
  3. Straight-on label readability prompt

I allowed two regenerations max per model before scoring.

Packshot results

Reference-style ecommerce packshot used in comparison

Nano Banana 2 stayed closer to the reference silhouette and color when the upload was sharp. It behaved like a catalog assistant: boring in a good way.

GPT Image 2 produced attractive lighting more often on pass one, but I saw more “premium reinterpretation” — fine for moodboards, risky when the buyer expects the exact SKU.

Lifestyle results

Both can do lifestyle. Banana 2 was easier to keep product-largest when I forbade prop spam. GPT Image 2 sometimes “directed” a prettier scene that quietly demoted the SKU.

If your PDP gallery needs trust, prefer Banana’s restraint. If you are pitching a brand film still, GPT’s flair can win.

Label / text behavior

Nobody is perfect. When labels warped:

  • Simplify the scene
  • Re-upload a sharper packshot
  • Add “preserve exact logo and label text”
  • If Banana 2 still fails, try Pro once

Don’t hop models every retry without changing inputs — you will learn nothing.

When to pick which

Choose Nano Banana 2 when

  • You have a real product photo to honor
  • You need a variant factory (colorways, angles)
  • You will later animate with Seedance

Use the ecommerce prompt pack as the script.

Choose GPT Image 2 when

  • You want exploratory hero aesthetics
  • The brief is campaign mood, not compliance packshots
  • Your team iterates in a chat-like loop on /gpt-image-2-generator

Final verdict

For product shots that must remain the product, Nano Banana 2 was the safer default in my tests. GPT Image 2 earns a seat for creative exploration — then feed the winning direction back into Banana with references when you need SKU-faithful variants.

FAQ

Is GPT Image 2 better than Nano Banana 2?

For some creative stills, yes. For reference-faithful ecommerce packs, Banana 2 won more often in my scripts.

Can I use both on one SKU?

Yes: explore on GPT Image 2, lock variants on Banana 2.

What about Nano Banana Pro?

Use Pro as a rescue tier for melted labels or hero finals — not as the daily driver.
